Matthew Perry Tackles Touchy David Schwimmer Questions At ‘Mr. Sunshine’ Panel

A warning to reporters who try to get Matthew Perry to talk smack about his former “Friends” co-stars: He will make fun of you.

Perry was promoting his new ABC sitcom “Mr. Sunshine” at a panel at the Television Critics Association Sunday when one reporter attempted to bait the actor into insulting his “Friends” co-star David Schwimmer, but Perry wasn’t having it. A transcript of the awkward exchange, which was the talk of the conference, reveals how Perry turned the tables on the reporter:

REPORTER: “For Matthew: All the ‘Friends’ are sort of cooking along pretty well these days, except, it seems, for David. We don’t see him very much.”

MATTHEW PERRY: “Now, if David were here, would you say, ‘Except, it seems, for Matthew’?”

REPORTER: “It seems as if you and Matt and certainly Lisa and Courteney are all pretty darn successful on TV, and maybe I’m missing something with David in the movies.”

PERRY: “Are we anywhere near a question?”

REPORTER: “Do you ever see David, and does he talk to you about his goals?”

PERRY: “‘Does he talk about his goals?'”

REPORTER: “Say that again.”

PERRY: “‘Does he talk about his goals?’ Is that what you said?”

REPORTER: “His goals, yes.”

PERRY: “I have not seen David in a while, but I – I would assume he’s doing exactly what he wants to be doing. … You know, he loves directing. He loves the theater. So he’s probably doing a bunch of that lame stuff.”

Obviously Perry was being sarcastic in calling Schwimmer’s focus on directing and theater “lame stuff.” But Perry was correct: Schwimmer may not be on television right now, but someone needs to inform that reporter that television is not the only medium.

In fact, Schwimmer’s second directorial turn, “Trust,” starring Clive Owen and Catherine Keener as a couple whose daughter is victimized by an online predator, will premiere at the Toronto Film Festival next month. A trailer for the drama hit the Internet over the weekend. (So it seems Schwimmer doesn’t need to talk to anyone about his “goals.

As for the rest of the cast of “Friends,” silver-haired Matt LeBlanc is going back to the small screen as well, starring in the new Showtime comedy “Episodes.” Courteney Cox is currently starring in ABC’s “Cougar Town,” and there are rumors that Jennifer Aniston, star of the upcoming comedy “The Switch,” might do a guest appearance. Lisa Kudrow’s critically acclaimed Web series “Web Therapy” just wrapped its third season (the show was also recently picked up by Showtime), and NBC has ordered another season of the documentary series she executive produces, “Who Do You Think You Are?”

So all of the “Friends” are doing just fine.
